One of my new favorite restaurants here in Salt Lake City is Zest Kitchen and Bar, which just opened a few months ago. Owner and operator, Casey Staker, successfully ran W Lounge for several years before closing its doors and taking a chance in opening the fresh and flavorful, Zest. I am pretty sure it was his destiny – because this restaurant is wonderful for so many reasons.
Zest is truly different than anything Salt Lake City has seen. The menu is local, veggie, organic, fresh, and mostly raw. But don’t mistake vegetarian for lack of flavor. After several visits to Zest, I can definitely say that their food and cocktails are not only unique, but full of flavor and personality. Everything from the Zucchini Noodles ($13) with fresh tomato sauce, pesto, and pine nuts (my personal favorite) to the Sliced Cucumbers ($7) with cashew cheese–have uplifting as well as complex notes. And definitely make sure to try their Cauliflower Curry soup with the beet reduction, because it WILL knock your socks off.
Zest is also making quite the name for itself in regards to cocktails. Different, old school, new & inventive, and outstandingly fresh – Zest’s libations are reason enough to check the place out. Try the Ginger Spice ($8) with fireball whiskey, ginger beer, apple juice, and candied ginger – this one packs a punch and will be my regular go to. For a less intense but equally flavorful drink, check out the Beet Sangria ($7). Organic red wine, organic beet juice, and fresh fruit provides a more earthy, laid back cocktail. In fact, take a seat at the dimly lit bar and try any of Zest’s specialty cocktails – then simply be delighted.
Zest is open late and also hosts an array of live music. From live DJs to acoustic guitar sets, there is something on the musical calendar for everyone. So, enjoy the atmosphere, the cocktails, and the amazing food and give Zest some of your local LOVE!
