Nuch’s Pizzeria & Restaurant | Salt Lake City

This past week we decided to check out a new (to us) pizza joint that a few friends had recommended. Now, let me start this post by saying that we are REALLY into pizza. When I am not carb-freeing it, I would say we go out specifically for pizza two or three times a month (that is a lot, right?? No wonder I need to lay off the carbs every now and then…). We generally lean towards the same few spots each time, but we are always open to trying a new place. However, our expectations are quite high.

We went on a Friday night at about 5:30 p.m. Immediately we were asked if we had a reservation. We didn’t even consider making one to grab pizza – even on a Friday. However, once we looked around and saw how tiny Nuch’s was, we made note that a reservation is probably a good idea in the future. They were booked for the night, but had one open table, so we got lucky. We were seated right next to the door, which was rather unfortunate since we were freezing cold the entire meal due to the door opening and closing with guests and take-out orders. But that could be avoided with a reservation in the future.

The vibe at Nuch’s is a little strange. It has a fine dining feel with white linen, dressed up wait staff, and an open kitchen. The food was a little dressed up as well, which we weren’t expecting. I think we were anticipating more of a relaxed pizza restaurant, and not a reservation/white linen situation. Some of the food matched that vibe, and some didn’t.

We started off with the stuffed mushrooms and were surprised at the beautiful presentation and taste. However, for the price ($6.95) we thought four mushrooms was kind of skimpy. Six mushrooms would have made more sense. They did taste great – rich and full of flavor with a light pesto sauce. Also, the mushrooms were cooked wonderfully – firm and tender, and NOT soggy. I can’t remember the last time I ordered stuffed mushrooms that didn’t end up in a pile of mush on my tongue. I really appreciated the fact that these babies held their shape and consistency. I would rather have four of these than 10 squishy, slimy stuffed mushrooms–like ones that have been delivered to my table so often.

Russ ordered a Margarita Pizza (crushed tomato, basil, mozzarella and olive oil | 12 inch $11.95) and I ordered the Beet Salad (mixture of Romaine, Boston, and red leaf lettuce tossed in a light balsamic vinaigrette topped with red and gold beets and goat cheese | $8.95). The pizza was awesome. The crust was light, flaky, and buttery. The sauce was delicious and you could definitely tell that it was made in-house and not out of a can. The ingredients were simple, but put together nicely and cooked perfectly. You can definitely tell that Nuch’s has the pizza part down. However, my salad was quite lackluster. I love beets and was really looking forward to the beet salad based on the description. Unfortunately, the only thing that was good about this salad was the beets themselves. The lettuce seemed like it was a few days old and a little wilted. The goat cheese was barely there, with only three small dabs placed on the beets. This salad would have done well with a crumbled goat cheese so that the flavor could be enjoyed throughout the entire salad, and not just in a bite or two. Because there were only a few ingredients in this salad, I wished they would have shined more – instead of leaving me with a plate of lettuce once the beets were gone.

We ordered the Berries Divine (fresh strawberries served with sweetened mascarpone cheese that has been flavored with fresh vanilla bean $4.95) for dessert. It was delicious. The mascarpone cheese was amazing, creamy, and lightly sweetened. The vanilla bean was front and center in this dish as well, which was delightful. It was a great way to end the meal without being overly sweet.

I think we will go back to Nuch’s. I have heard great things about their pasta – and would like to give it a try. However, I don’t think that just because I order salad, that my dining experience should be less fulfilling than those who order a pizza. But I think I will definitely wait until my diet isn’t so low-carb to give them another shot!
