Restaurant Reviews

Alamexo | Salt Lake City, Downtown

When I first heard that Zy Restaurant was going to be “closing,” I was a little sad. As a local business supporter, I want to see every local business and restaurant succeed. However, once I heard that Zy wasn’t really “closing,” but rather, changing its concept, I was excited and intrigued.

Alamexo has taken the place of Zy Restaurant, and everything is still right with the world! Alamexo is a fun, festive, higher-end, and tasty Mexican restaurant. I met up with a few of my fellow foodies and bloggers to check it out. We ordered many menu items, mostly from the Aperitivos section, and shared food and had a great time. Our service was great, and while temperatures outside that evening were frigid, we had a warm and welcoming meal.

My favorite menu items of the evening were the Ceviche Del Dia (a daily Ceviche special – and probably my favorite dish of the night), served with crispy plantains (daily price varies), the Quesadilla De hongos y cuitlacoche with Wild mushrooms & cuitlacoche, queso chihuahua with salsa verde cruda ($8.95), and the Guacamole En Molcajete, prepared tableside, served with chips & salsa ($10.95). All fantastic!

We also enjoyed the Elotes De Le Calle, roasted corn with queso fresco, lime & chile molido ($4.95), the Queso Fundido, baked queso Chihuahua with rajas, house made chorizo, cilantro & white onion served with warm corn tortillas ($8.95), and Carne Asada, adobo marinated flat iron steak, melted queso Oaxaca, pico de gallo & salsa de arbol ($19.95). The Lobster and Mushroom Sopes were also delicious!

And if you LOVE plantains as much as I do, you know how hard they can be to find – especially in Salt Lake City. However, don’t worry, Alamexo has outstanding fried plantains that you should definitely order for dessert! YUM!

I was really impressed with the food at Alamexo. It is definitely a higher-end Mexican restaurant, so if you are looking for a huge smothered burrito, then go elsewhere. But, if you are looking for interesting, eclectic, delicious, and quailty Mexican food, you will certainly want to check Alamexo out as soon as possible. As for this experience, I would not have changed a thing.

Also, I have to say thanks to all my wonderful foodie friends who take as many photos of food as I do and make a night sharing small plates heavenly. You ladies are the best – and I am sure your company makes food taste even better!
