Last night a bunch of Salt Lake City food bloggers gathered at Sapa Sushi Bar and Asian Grill for a menu tasting! I was lucky enough to be invited to sit down with other foodies, try some great sushi, and relax with a few cocktails. Sapa did a great job with the large group – the service was awesome (especially Kurby, our eccentric and hysterical server who HATES sea urchin), the food was timed well, and we all had a great time.
I wanted to share a few of my favorite menu items! Sapa brought us several sushi rolls that were rice-less, which I loved. Every time I crave sushi, I forget that it doesn’t have to be a carb overload. Also, something that was great to learn is that Sapa will do rolls with their black rice on request. The sushi rolls had everything from editable flowers to amazing kumquat & pear reductions.
We also had some great traditional rolls (Rising Sun was awesome) and wonderful curry puffs that had an Indian quality to them. I am pretty much guaranteed to love anything wrapped in a puff pastry, however. 😉 I will say additionally, that I do not love sea urchin. Our server likened it to the texture of a “cat’s tongue,” – so there is that.
For the two main courses, we tasted the Massaman Beef and the Seared Lamb – both were very rich, flavorful, and delicious. The lamb was cooked near perfection – not overdone as lamb can be so often. The Massaman Beef was super rich, creamy, and full-bodied. The beef was shredded, which I found to be a nice change to most Massaman Beef dishes I have had. The black rice is also an amazing side note.
Thank you to Sapa for hosting a wonderful event! I have been to Sapa many times, but the items that we tasted last night were truly different, unique, and bursting with flavor.
