Frida Bistro | Rethinking Brunch

It is no secret that Frida Bistro is one of my favorite restaurants in Salt Lake City, but a few weeks ago they raised the bar just a little bit more. Frida is now serving brunch on Saturday! A group of girlfriends and I headed over on their opening day to check it out. And not just any group of girls – a group of girls that brunch on a very regular (nearly weekly) basis. We set our brunch expectations very high. 😉

I was super excited when I saw the menu. The selection is large and there is everything from different spins on huveos to roasted goat dishes. With five of us ready to eat, we got to try quite a few different items. The menu is also super affordable with plates ranging anywhere from $5 (Consome de Chivo) to $14 (Tacos de Pescado).

We started with the Consome de Chivo (traditional braised goat consomme) and the Quesadilla de Huitlachoche (blue corn tortilla, sweet corn truffle, menonita & goat cheese, roasted corn, three-chili-mango marmalade $11). I thought both were outstanding. The Consome was a very strong broth – I loved it, but it definitely has a unique flavor. And the Quesadilla was full of mature flavors as well as cheesy deliciousness.

The entrees that we ordered were actually ALL a hit. There wasn’t one person who didn’t love the flavors and presentation of their brunch. What I really like about Frida’s menu is their twist on the classics. The Benedictos ($12) comes with a choice of house-cured salmon, ham, or house-made chorizo with blue corn biscuits, poached eggs, and clinatro cream. The cliantro cream was a great substitute for hollandaise, and the corn biscuits were delicious. It was truly a great spin on Eggs Benedict. Also, the Enchiladas Rellenas con Queso de Cabra was amazing with handmade corm tortillas, goat cheese, mole negro, eggs, sesame seeds, and Mexican crema ($11). This was a very rich dish with amazingly silky mole sauce. You get the best of enchiladas, mole, AND breakfast.

Some of the other dishes ordered were the Huevos Rancheros (handmade corn tortillas, two eggs, warmed tomato salsa, $9), Tacos de Pescado (battered sea bass, handmade corn tortillas, cabbage, tomato, avocado, Mexican crema, $14) and the Chilaquiles Verdes o Rojos (fried corn tortillas, tomato or tomatillo – jalapeno salsa, queso fresco, two eggs with choice of roasted goat, shredded chicken, or carne asada, $8). All were tasty and unique, yet still had notes of familiarity.

However, I think my favorite menu item surprised me. The Papas con Chivo was the hit of the day! I had never had goat until our trip to Frida for brunch, and I have to say, I loved it much more than I had anticipated. The Papas con Chivo comes with potato hash, roasted goat, epazote, eggs, and a tequila demi-glace ($13). It was rich and was the perfect comfort food for a cold morning. The goat was extremely tender and went perfectly with the eggs and sauce. The entire dish really came together for an amazing meal.

Frida Bistro’s brunch is certainly one that you will crave. It is way off the grid from the regular eggs, bacon, and Bloody Mary brunch that you can get from any breakfast slinging restaurant in the city. Speaking of, the Bloody Mary at Frida was BY FAR one of the best I have ever had.
