The Annex by Epic Brewing, Brunch | Salt Lake City
While I get out for brunch a lot less often than I used to – it is still my favorite meal, ever. Over the holiday break, I had the chance to check out brunch at The Annex by Epic Brewing. The Annex has been open for a while now, but I hadn’t gone yet. Mostly, because I kept hearing conflicting reviews. Overall, the one thing I heard the most was that the food was heavy and rich, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but that maybe the food tip-toed on the side of TOO heavy. I thought brunch/lunch would be the best time to give The Annex a taste and see what I thought for myself.
Brunch was great; rich and….also light! I also really liked the atmosphere of the restaurant – sort of a welcoming industrial vibe, with a very appealing bar set up (a needed element due to the over 36 Epic beers they have on tap at any given time). And of course, any good brunch needs the company of the standard brunch booze – bloody mary’s and mimosa, yes,…but also my favorite, (which you rarely see on a menu in Salt Lake), the beermosa. A beermosa made with Epic’s Intermountain Wheat Beer was pretty much to die for. The bloody mary was also one for the food porn photo books as well, complete with a side of bacon.
I ordered the Crab Benedict ($15) House-Made English Muffin, Hollandaise, Poached Eggs and my friend ordered the Huevos Caballeros ($11) Eggs, Pico De Gallo, White Beans, Crème Fraiche, Avocado. Both were great. The crab in the benny was abundant and fresh and the homemade English muffin made a huge difference. The hollandaise sauce WAS heavy, but not at all in a bad way. It was creamy and rich, and went perfect with the crab. This definitely was not a light dish, however. The huevos headed in the opposite direction – a very light, flavorful, and delicate brunch item. The crisp tortilla was a welcome change from the soggy tortillas you can often find at the bottom of a heavy huevos dish and The Annex also nailed the flavor by adding a good spicy kick into the mix. Yum.
I was super impressed by our quick brunch at The Annex and will definitely be back for subsequent meals!
