IS IT THE MARGARITAS?

These are all questions that I asked Don, one of the two owners of Tres Hombres Mexican Grill and Cantina, when I visited last week to photograph some of their beautiful cocktails. Can you believe that Tres Hombres has been cooking up some of the most craved Mexican food in the valley for nearly 35 years?

There aren’t many businesses that can say they have been making the cut for that long, let alone restaurants. But serving up quality, consistent, delicious food — not to mention “the tequila” (which Don says keeps them coming back, of course) are just a few ways to go about it.

If you didn’t know, Tres Hombres and its owners Don and Mike, have been serving our community since 1984. In that time, they have catered for high profile companies, athletes, and rockstars (including ZZ Top). Mayor Ben McAdams even presented Tres Hombres with an award in 2015 for being a dedicated business in the community for over 30 years.

Not only has the community been loyal to the awesome food and tequila, but so have their employees. Many of those who work for Don and Mike have been there a number of years, including bartender Martin, who has been slinging drinks for Tres Hombres for 28 years! TWENTY EIGHT YEARS! I think he probably knows a thing or two about margaritas.

You can feel the dedication that the owners have to the success of Tres Hombres, and even Don himself has completed most of the interior, including the tables, booths, new bar, welcome desk and other indoor and outdoor features. And, it sure is a welcoming space.

With Cinco de Mayo coming up, Tres Hombres invited me over to check out its expansive tequila menu and try some of the cocktails and margaritas.

Over the years, I have been to Tres Hombres a multitude of times, however — with a newly renovated bar and a reason to party coming up — we got serious about the tequila! And let me tell you — Tres Hombres has them all — offering up some of the most expensive brands, as well as your affordable favorites. In fact, they have over 60 different kinds of tequila on the menu.

Here are some that we tried over great conversation.

Blood Orange Margarita:
Silver tequila, orange liqueur, San Pellegrino, blood orange juice
Served blended or on rocks with fresh blood orange and lime

Mexico City Mule:
Silver tequila and ginger beer
Served with fresh lime over ice in a copper mug

Both of these were made with VIDA Tequila!

Pomarita:
Silver Tequila, Triple Sec, and pomegranate liqueur

Sangrita Loco:
A snifter of VIDA Anejo Tequila with a blood orange and lime sangrita backer

Custom Margarita (We called this the Spring Break):
Don Julio Reposado and a Gran Marnier Floater – blended

Watermelon Margarita – Blended

Of course, we also sipped on some premium tequilas!

but don’t let that fool you — this one is wonderful)
