Root’s Cafe | Millcreek
We are still trying to check out restaurants in our new hood – Millcreek and Cottonwood Heights area – and we are finding great things all the time. Roots Cafe has been around for a while, and I am happy that we are closer to it these days. We decided to stop in for brunch a few weeks ago, and it was a pretty great experience!
Roots Cafe is adjacent to a darling boutique, Flamingo Antiques, which is also worth checking out on its own. The wait was pretty substantial on a Sunday around 11 when we went. It was nice to be able to wander around Flamingo Antiques, hot coffee in hand, while we waited. However, waiting for a table was not the best part of our experience at Roots Cafe. Now that the weather is getting cold, there isn’t much room to wait once your name is on the list. And, after you have finished wandering Flamingo Antiques, you end up standing uncomfortably close to the other patrons in a very small hallway, waiting for a table. So, before you head to Roots Cafe, know there will probably be a wait, and that it might be a little irritating. However, if you can “wait” it out, then you are in for a treat!
Roots uses organic, local, and fair trade ingredients (yay!) – which of course, makes their food even better. They also serve fresh juices, and for a girl who can’t order a mimosa or bloody mary at brunch these days, a fresh juice is much appreciated. I ordered the Cucumber Cooler, and it was delicious (and pretty)!
For brunch we ordered the Roots Huevos Rancheros (two farm fresh eggs cooked to your temp, choice of protein, black beans, pepper jack cheese, avocado and house made ranchero sauce. Served with flour or corn tortillas $9) and the Peeto Breakfast Sandwich (a meaty morning delight! farm fresh eggs, applewood smoked bacon, spicy sausage, caramelized jalapeno and avocado all between your choice of bread. Served with house potatoes $9.95). This Huevos might be my new favorite in the city – it was so fresh and delicious; the housemade ranchero sauce really made a difference. The Peeto Breakfast Sandwich was also great, hearty but not to heavy! While this was only a small sampling of their very tasty sounding brunch menu, the food was delicious and very much worth the wait. The service was also very friendly!
From our little jaunt to Roots Cafe, I can definitely say that we will be back – and I would recommend it as a new one to try in your brunch rotation. Get out of downtown, closer to the mountains, and get that neighborhood vibe! This local joint is a great one to support!
